Greek National Lottery
The lottery has deep roots in Greek popular tradition and serves as a cultural reference point for Greek society.
The concept of the lottery, initially known as "Lachnos," appears in the biography of Domenikos Theotokopoulos. While residing in Venetian-ruled Heraklion, the renowned Greek artist recorded receiving a permit from the Venetian authorities on December 26, 1566, to sell "lachnoi" through a drawing. The prize was a work of his depicting the Crucifixion, already linking the lottery to art, painting, and illustration.
